A Message from Joy

Originally from Sioux City, Iowa, Joy is a veteran of the United States Air Force. She is adamant about continuing to serve the country by serving this community. She also has a background as a qualified mental health professional. For Joy, her patients are her priority. Providing inclusive, equitable, culturally competent and compassionate care is her mission. Joy enjoys being outside, cooking, writing and spending time with her family.

Her personal mission at Charles Drew Health Center:

“To provide compassionate, patient-centered, evidenced based care to every single patient I have the privilege to serve.”

What drives Joy’s passion for healthcare:

“Declining access to primary care has a greater impact on the underserved and marginalized populations. In my previous work I found that the above populations need more support for establishing primary care, identifying determinants of health, and receiving education on chronic disease management. The medical and social complexities much be addressed with compassion and advance knowledge in this arena.

I realized early in my nursing career that I wanted and needed to advance my practice so that I could help to fill the growing need for primary healthcare providers. I will continue to work to expand my scope of care with my patients and grow my knowledge as a family nurse practitioner. I want to be able to be a much-needed resource for our community. We can partner with our patients to make changes. We start with one patient, and together we can change the lives of a community.”
