Earn-a-Bike 2016 Distributes 215 New Bikes, Helmets and Bike Locks

Charles Drew Health Center, Inc.  hosted its 5th Annual Earn-a-Bike Program, Saturday June 25, 2016. The Big Saturday Event began at 9am and concluded at 5pm.  A total of 215 children received new bicycles, helmets and locks  . The Big Saturday Event took place at Charles Drew Health Center’s Fitness Center, 2910 Burdette Street. Because of the huge response this year, CDHC hosted three sessions: 9am to 11am;Picture2 12 noon to 2pm and 3pm to 5pm.

This year’s event was again funded in large part by Children’s Hospital and Medical Center Preventing Childhood Obesity Community Grants. Children’s awarded Charles Drew Health Center, Inc. a grant for $25,000 to support the event. Other sponsors include: CHI, Community Bike Project, Creighton University REACH Program, HyVee Midtown Store, Live Well Omaha, Two Men and a Truck, United Healthcare and Walmart (Near 72nd and Hickory).

Children participating in The Big Saturday Event  completed 4 hours of community service and a short essay about their volunteer experience and why they would like to receive a new bike.

The Charles Drew Health Center is sponsoring its 5th Annual Earn-a-Bike Program. A total of 215 children will receive new bicycles, helmets and locks at the Big Saturday Event to be held Saturday, June 25th. The Big Saturday Event took place at Charles Drew Health Center’s Fitness Center, 2910 Burdette from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. There were three sessions: 9am to 11am; 12 noon to 2pm and 3pm to 5pm.

The Big Saturday Event is a day filled with fun, food, games and education. Educational sessions are provide for children and parents. As a part of the event, Charles Drew Health Center, Inc. staff and volunteers will be on hand to help connect families with community resources. In 2012 and 13 CDHC distributed refurnished bikes for students.  In 2014, Charles Drew gave away 50 new bikes, helmets and locks. Because of a $25,000 grant received from Children’s Hospital, Charles Drew was able to increase the number of new bikes given away from 50 to 200! This year the number increased from 200 to 215!
